Mexico Bound

Park is going to Mexico...Baja...again this year.  Every year the Utah Trail Machine Association (UTMA) heads to Baja to do a service project for the people there and then they hop on their dirt bikes and ride for 5 days...roughly 200 miles a day for a total of about 1,000 miles.  He's going with my uncle Dennis and cousin Austin.  He's been anxiously anticipating this trip for months now.

This is Park's 3rd trip down there for this.  The first year his dirt bike blew up on the first day of riding and he couldn't finish.  He hitched a ride to California where I just happened to be with my family watching my sister run in a track meet.  Last year my uncle Dennis wrecked his dirt bike.  Park stayed with him while he was transported to a couple of different Mexican hospitals and then finally airlifted out of Mexico and into the US so he could get treated for a severely broken and dislocated shoulder.  After Dennis left, Park was able to meet back up with his group and finish.  What will year number 3 bring?  I'm hoping that the "third time's a charm" and everyone finishes and comes home safe and sound.

Everyone thinks I'm crazy for letting him go (please see above paragraph).  Mexico isn't the safest place to be visiting nowadays.  I'm pregnant.  He's in school...taking 25 credit hours.  We have no money.  I could have said no.  BUT.  Park's 30th birthday is in 2 weeks.  He's also graduating from college this year...a HUGE accomplishment that I wasn't sure was ever going to happen.  And we will be having our first child in a couple of months.  This is his last hurrah.  Plus.  He loves this motorcycle stuff.  And Dennis offered to pay his way if Park would do all the work to get Dennis and Austin's dirt bikes ready to go.  So...I said yes.  He's a hard worker and he deserves to have a little bit of fun.  Yes...he thinks this is fun.  Obviously our opinions of fun differ.  He promised to call every day and be as safe as humanly possible.  We'll see what happens...

Park made a website about his Mexico trip last year for a final project in one of his classes.  It gives more detail about the service project, riding, maps, stories, and pictures.  He did a great job on it.  If you are at all interested in his trip last year, here is the link: http://sites.google.com/site/utmabajatrip2010/.
